Course Summary: CXC English A – English Language

This course prepares students for success in the CSEC English A Examination by developing competence in understanding, analysing, and creating language in a variety of contexts. It emphasizes effective communication through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while nurturing critical thinking and creativity.

Students will:

  • Understand written, spoken, and visual texts by identifying main ideas, tone, mood, bias, and the use of literary and language devices.
  • Analyse how language is used to persuade, inform, entertain, and influence, with particular focus on media, literature, and everyday communication.
  • Create original texts, both functional and creative, that are well-structured, clear, and tailored to audience and purpose.

The course covers:

  • Comprehension and Summary Writing – extracting key ideas, interpreting meaning, and condensing information.
  • Persuasive and Media Language – recognising rhetorical devices and evaluating arguments.
  • Creative Writing – crafting narratives, descriptive pieces, and poetry.
  • Functional Writing – letters, reports, speeches, memos, proposals, and job applications.
  • Expository and Argumentative Essays – structuring logical, evidence-based arguments.
  • Literary Appreciation – analysing poetry, drama, and prose with attention to language and style.
  • Oral Communication – preparing and delivering speeches, debates, and presentations with clarity and confidence.

Assessment is guided by CXC profile dimensions:

  • Understanding (30%) – comprehension, grammar, listening, and summary tasks.
  • Analysing (30%) – literary analysis, evaluation of arguments, oral critique.
  • Creating (40%) – functional and creative writing, oral presentations, essays, and projects.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the linguistic skills, critical awareness, and expressive abilities required to excel in the CSEC English A examination and to communicate effectively in academic, professional, and everyday settings.
