This course is organized around a thematic approach to learning.  These themes will provide the context within which the essential understandings, knowledge and competencies will be developed in Learners.

Its aim is to bring Learners who are lagging behind up to the achievement level of their peers.

Carpentry

This course is designed to equip learners with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and work attitudes necessary to perform at an intermediate level in carpentry and general construction. The program emphasizes hands-on training, safety practices, and problem-solving techniques to prepare participants for employment in the construction industry or for self-employment.

3-Month Carpentry Course (HEART/NSTA General Construction Level 2 Standard)

📅 Duration: 12 Weeks

Schedule: 5 days/week, 6 hours/day (360 total hours)

 

🏗️ Month 1: Foundation & Core Carpentry Skills

Week 1–2: Introduction to Construction & Safety

  • Overview of the construction industry

  • Workplace safety protocols (PPE, hazard identification)

  • Basic first aid and emergency response

  • Introduction to construction tools and equipment

Week 3–4: Measuring, Marking & Cutting

  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings

  • Measuring and marking techniques

  • Safe use of hand tools: saws, chisels, hammers

  • Power tool basics: circular saw, jigsaw, drill

 

🧱 Month 2: Structural Carpentry & Formwork

Week 5–6: Framing & Joinery

  • Timber selection and preparation

  • Basic joints: butt, lap, mortise and tenon

  • Wall framing techniques

  • Roof trusses and floor joists

Week 7–8: Formwork & Concrete Integration

  • Constructing and dismantling formwork

  • Reinforcement placement

  • Pouring and curing concrete

  • Integration with masonry and steelwork (cross-training)

 

🚪 Month 3: Fixtures, Finishing & Assessment

Week 9–10: Doors, Windows & Interior Fixtures

  • Installing doors and windows

  • Cabinetry basics

  • Drywall installation and finishing

  • Surface preparation and painting

Week 11–12: Final Project & Assessment

  • Capstone project: build a small structure (shed, gazebo, etc.)

  • Evaluation of workmanship, safety, and teamwork

  • Written and practical assessments

  • Portfolio development and career guidance

 

📜 Certification & Pathways

Upon successful completion, learners will be prepared to:

  • Sit for HEART/NSTA Level 2 assessments

  • Enter apprenticeships or employment in general construction

  • Continue to Level 3 or specialize in advanced carpentry or masonry

CSEC Social Studies New

It explores themes such as the family, culture, identity, and social groups, showing how these shape personal values and behavior. It also examines governance, democracy, law, and regional integration, encouraging awareness of civic responsibility and active participation in society. Additionally, the subject highlights economic issues such as resources, production, trade, work, and sustainable development, linking them to Caribbean and global realities. Importantly, Social Studies emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills, enabling students to better address social challenges like unemployment, crime, inequality, and environmental issues. The ultimate goal is to create responsible, well-informed citizens who contribute positively to the growth and progress of their communities and the wider Caribbean region.
